House Desmet

Via OWI, a modern home with a lot of pizzazz by Belgian Photographer Vercruysse Frederik. Overall the spare styling adds a lot of cohesiveness, but the creative casework really seals the deal. The towering multi-purpose cabinet built into the slope of the ceiling is an amazing graphic element (a rare occasion when the sacrifice of functionality may just be worth it). Clinton Hill Brownstone by Elizabeth Roberts

Discovered on Remodelista, New York's Elizabeth Roberts Architecture took on the renovation of this 5-story, 1866 Brooklyn Brownstone. Noted as one of the few remaining original architectural details, the character of the black painted stair case caught my eye immediately. What doesn't look better with three coats of glossy black paint on it? And the an impressively modest kitchen, sparsely furnished rooms, and loads of light do well to keep to avoid New York's cramped-and-cluttered trap. More at Elizabeth Roberts.

I don't have any information on this one; Looks very UK though. I am really drawn to the pivoting wood-framed glass doors. They create such a great transition between spaces that I can forgive the subtle fish-tank/interrogation-room vibe. See more at OWI.

Henry Wilson's Lamp

Apologies for the infrequency of posts lately. I have been coming up short with inspiring spaces and objects which is why I was immediately struck by a new project by Henry Wilson, currently displayed in Antwerp's Valerie Traan Gallery. The Factory Lamp (hack) is a rare example of something so frustratingly simple and beautiful that I find myself both in awe and resentful that I wasn't behind it. A classic task lamp, retrofitted with a blown glass shade and a low-profile LED light source. In Wilson's word; "It emphasizes the intricate engineering and restrained delicacy of the original design." There is indeed something perfect in the transparency of the glass paired with the functionality of the armature. Sign me up.

The Canteen at The SOHO

Spotted first on Apartment Therapy, The Canteen at Tokyo's The SOHO was designed by Masamichi Katayama of Wonderwall. With a broad and diverse portfolio, and a client list that includes Bathing Ape, Uniqlo, and Godiva, Katayama has built a valuable brand of himself, revered within the retail design world. Bright and smooth best describes the pallet of The Canteen, with wood panels and colorful tile lining the walls and a matrix of overhead pendant lights hovering above concrete floors. Im especially fond of the wood-lined gabled booths, just the splash of Scandanavia the space needs. See more at Wonderwall.

Out West

Purekitchen rarely strays far from the warmth and safety of NYC, but we recently made an exception. This kitchen renovation in Berkley, CA definitely has some West Coast flare; One part Cherry shaker, one part red paint. As an environmental lawyer, the owner already knew the importance of keeping VOCs low and Urea-formaldehyde out of the picture. And if anyone's keeping track, we had this bad boy built out West too -- 15.2 miles from the site to be exact (Thank you Woodshanti). Consider this a taste of what's to come, so keep an eye out for new colors and door options from us in the coming months.
