I couldn't help but have a bit of vicarious pride in finding this apartment tour in the
NYT this morning, that of fellow RISD-alumni Robert Highsmith and Stefanie Brechbeuhler (Purekitchen is both owned and marketed by two RISD alumni). Their home characterizes the historic detail of many Brooklyn buildings. Wide-plank softwood floors, fluted moulding embedded in 100+ years of paint, and endearingly light-friendly windows are what keep me in my apartment (details that overshadow my proximity Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, a glaring lack of outlets, and steam heat that sounds like a coal-fired locomotive approaching a station). The perception of open floor space in the Cobble Hill apartment is likely a testament to the couples maintenance of a small, but well-curated selection of furniture and artwork -- they were assisted by some classmates and some generous and unusually well-furnished grandparents. As is typical of rental apartments, the kitchen always leaves a bit to be desired, but that's where we come in...
The full slideshow can be seen at
The New York Times -- hopefully it gives you the same enthusiasm for some spring cleaning that it gave me.
